ELSA

14th May 2025

At Davyhulme Primary School we have a dedicated, experienced Pastoral Team offering a range of support to our children. We understand that children are more engaged in their learning and are happier when their emotional needs are being met. This can be a simple check-in or a more targeted support such as ELSA or Drawing and  Talking Therapy.

Mental health and wellbeing is a major factor in the success a child can have in life. We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all our children.
ELSA support can help with:
*Learning ways to calm your mind and cope with worries.
*Learning ways to help you feel better and happier.
*Finding ways to build and maintain healthy friendships.
*Helping you feel good about who you are.
* Learning ways to express emotions safely.
*Understanding feelings around grief, separation or transition.
*Recognising how emotions affect you and finding ways to manage them.

We have a designated ELSA room which provides a safe and welcoming space for children to think about their personal circumstances and how best to manage them. With support from parents and staff, areas to work on will be identified and sessions planned to facilitate children in developing new skills and coping strategies that allow them to manage social and emotional demands more effectively. ELSA’s are not there to fix things, they provide emotional support and help children find their own solutions. Drawing and Talking is a child-centred one-to-one intervention focusing on supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people. Children are impacted emotionally by many different things. Sometimes they are unable to make sense of how they are feeling and how those feelings are impacting on their happiness and ability to navigate the world. A trained Drawing and Talking Practitioner will work one-to-one with a child.

Within the sessions, the child will draw anything they choose and will be encouraged to talk about what they have drawn using storytelling language to help them make sense of their internal world. The technique allows the child to process any emotions they are holding internally in a safe and non-confrontational way, working at their own pace.
